If you are a determined, energetic young person between the ages of 17-24 and are ready for a rewarding experience that can help prepare you for a successful future, you should consider joining City Year, to spend a year as a tutor, mentor and role model for children, while also participating in a unique leadership experience that will help build your résumé and earn almost $5,000 for higher education. Corps members serve on teams in one or more of our nation’s schools, where they provide in-class and one-on-one academic support, run mentoring programs, provide college and career prep for high school students, run after school programs, and engage students in service learning projects. Members innovate and find strategies to help students and to improve the schools and communities they work in, showing the world what a group of young idealistic people can do, and inspiring everyone around them to do the same. An equally significant transformation happens within corps members themselves, who given this unique opportunity, ultimately become more empowered to chart a course for their own lives, and to become leaders for life. The City Year experience is something that changes lives, but it is challenging work, and we seek members who are capable and determined to meet the goals they set for themselves. Throughout their year, corps members receive training and develop critical leadership, management and communications skills, giving participants the real world experience that will help them prepare for virtually any challenged they could face in the future. To ensure that corps members have the best possible experience at City Year, we offer numerous benefits including opportunities to network with employers, full health insurance, a T Mobile cell phone, Timberland uniform in addition to a weekly living stipend and an education award of $4,725 upon completion of their service year. The program runs from September 2008 to June 2009, and City Year is currently accepting applications from young people who want to serve.
